Ingredients
4 large eggs
1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
1/4 cup (60 ml) heavy cream
2 tbsp (30 g) granulated sugar (optional)
1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla extract (optional)
1/2 tsp (3 g) ground cinnamon (optional)
Pinch of salt
8 slices of thick-cut bread (brioche or challah preferred)
2 tbsp (28 g) unsalted butter
How Do You Cook It?
Prepare the Batter: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar (optional), vanilla extract (optional), ground cinnamon (optional), and a pinch of salt until well combined.
Soak the Bread: Pour the egg mixture into a shallow dish. Dip each slice of bread into the mixture, ensuring both sides are well coated. Allow the bread to soak for about 20-30 seconds per side to absorb the batter.
Heat the Skillet: Heat a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt and slightly brown.
Cook the French Toast: Place the soaked bread slices onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter as needed.
Serve Immediately: Transfer the cooked French toast to a serving plate. Top with your choice of toppings (see below). Serve your easy French toast hot.
Tips & Tricks
Bread Choice: For best results, use day-old brioche or challah bread. The slightly stale bread absorbs the batter without becoming soggy.
Even Cooking: Ensure your skillet is preheated properly and cook the French toast in batches to avoid overcrowding, which can lead to uneven cooking.
Flavour Variations: Add a dash of nutmeg or a splash of orange zest to the batter for a different flavour profile.
Serving Suggestions
Classic Toppings: Serve with maple syrup, honey, or a mix of fresh berries.
Luxurious Touch: Top with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Savoury Twist: Pair with crispy bacon or sausage links for a savoury-sweet breakfast.
Freezing and Reheating
Freezing: Allow the French toast to cool completely. Arrange the slices on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze until solid. Transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container and store for up to 2 months.
Reheating: Reheat frozen French toast slices in a toaster, toaster oven, or conventional oven at 175°C (350°F) for about 10 minutes or until heated through.
